Decided it was time to replace the engine on my with a reman from cruiserparts. Also, for those that care this was one of the only few places that actually had an engine in stock and the price was within my budget. I searched high and low and several places stopped carrying them, so for those in a similar situation please take a look at cruiserparts.
They also passed that engines are rebuilt with all Toyota Parts and seals. The other places just said like OEM so who knows what you actually getting. Will confirm once I get the actual engine. Planning to start this project early next month as the subject line state what capacity engine hoist should I get? Thinking a 1 ton from Harbor freight will work but wanted to confirm for anyone that's done it.
I am planning to leave the transmission in the Cruiser because I have limited overhead space. Joined Dec 26, Messages 2, Location For a engine I would contact Slow95z. Load leveler is key if you don't have folks to help you move it around. Helps to take wheels off and put on blocks and strap frame to axle to keep springs compressed. I would have been scared to do with a 1 ton lift as you need the boom extended.
Box Rocket. Better to have more capacity than you need than just barely enough. I just picked up a 2. I'm sure it's plenty but I'd feel sketchy having anything less.

Slow95z is a member who has a part out business and always has decent parts for reasonable prices. Joined Dec 10, Messages 7, Here's one:. Could you please help me guide to a place to get a completely rebuilt engine. I was looking into getting one from cruiserparts, but it is just almost impossible to get in touch with them.
Thanks Andras. MickeyB said:. Last edited: Oct 9, If you had used a 2 ton bottle jack before, to lift this thing, whatever it was, you WOULD have built up your "push down" muscles. Which ones those are, I don't know. That's the law. If you have a pump area of X and a cylinder area of 4X, X pounds of force on the handle will produce 4X pounds of lift. If you have a pump area of 4X the former jack, and the same area of the piston, you will seesaw on the handle.
You will lift nothing, beyond your own weight. Double, triple, quadruple the handle length, yes. Buy a prybar if you want to lift what is more than the jack is designed for. I've repaired, for pay, hundreds of them, bottle and floor jack types. The designers of bottle jacks, such as you have, determine where on the outer casing the fill plug should be. It shoud be filled TO that point. Enough to stroke the ram to full extension.
If it can't "breathe", suck air in as you stroke the pump, and allow the fluid level to go down, you can suck air in the vacuum and not get a full lift from the stroke. Then, when you lower the jack, you CAN get a blast of compressed air trying to get out of the plug. What the hell are those? Jack the sumbitch full up, turn the valve to release or lower, stand on it. You have just bled it. If, when you get off it, it goes up an inch or 2, your plug is sealing, NOT breathing, venting, compreesed air is in the system.
Pull the plug, if it falls the rest of the way, you know the plug is sealing the system. Cheers, George. I have a failed Horror Freight 8 ton ram and the only reason I can find for the failure is the ram was pumped too far and the internal seals are somehow damaged. Since you now have one of these it is imprerative you do not over extend it or it will be permanent junk. I saw the posting too late to mention that Northern Tools has replacement rams and I have used them with good success.
The rubber plug is normal and it is a pressure relief just in case any pressure gets into the reservoir. As to using transmission fluid, I remember this stuff can attack some seals and I suspect the Horror Freight and Northern Tools hydraulic rams will have the cheapest seals available so the auto transmission fluid is not a good idea.
YOu only need a light weight oil with rust and oxidation inhibitors such as a ISO 32 grade hydraulic oil or spindle oil even a light turbine oil will do a good job. Toolnut, It is funny you mention your failed Horror Freight jack. I was so disappointed in it yesterday, I took it back and got a refund. The amount of work to jack it up was ridiculous!! I ordered a Torin dual-pump replacement jack today from Northern Tools.
Northern Tools did not carry a direct replacement, since mine is a flat-base jack and is so old. The one I ordered has a clevis base, and I hope it bolts right in-place without any modifications.
I will report back in a few days and let everybody know the quality of the Torin jack, in the event somebody else needs a replacement jack. Thanks guys!!! Definetly a rubber push in plug.
